When teachers and parents name primary-school subjects, they often begin with English, Mathematics, Science, History and Geography. That list feels familiar because English and Mathematics dominate the Common Entrance examination, while several other areas appear in the First School Leaving Certificate. The classroom curriculum is broader. Cameroon’s revised primary curriculum for the English subsystem organises learning through ten official carrier subjects, and several familiar subjects now sit inside those larger headings.
The ten carrier subjects are English Language and Literature, Mathematics, Science and Technology, French, Social Studies, Vocational Studies, Arts, Physical Education and Sports, National Languages and Cultures, and Information and Communication Technologies. A toolbox that shows only a few examination labels may help with revision, but it cannot support all the weekly planning a primary teacher must do.
Science and Technology is not one narrow science course. Its components include Health Education, Environmental Education, and Technology and Engineering. This means a teacher may need lesson notes on hygiene, nutrition, disease prevention, water, soil, pollution, weather, materials, tools, simple machines and design. The official carrier subject should remain visible, but the component should also appear in search, filters, lesson titles and assessment settings.
Social Studies contains Citizenship at Level I and adds History and Geography from Level II. Vocational Studies contains Agro-pastoral Farming and Arts and Crafts, with Home Economics included from Level II. Arts contains Visual Arts and Performing Arts, including classroom work with music, rhythm, movement, drama and creative expression. These names explain why a ten-subject list can look incomplete even when the underlying curriculum content is present.
Information and Communication Technologies includes basic computer knowledge, productivity tools, internet and communication, health and safety ethics, and basic computational thinking. Coding is not named as a separate carrier subject in the primary timetable, but computational thinking provides an important curriculum bridge. A modern teacher toolbox can support coding and digital creation as enrichment while still identifying the official ICT outcome being developed.
The Common Entrance and the FSLC should not be treated as identical. Recent reporting describes Common Entrance candidates being tested principally in English Language and Mathematics. The FSLC is a leaving certificate with written, oral and practical assessment; its papers have grouped curriculum components into English, Mathematics and broader general papers, while practical work has also tested vocational and creative skills. Exact formats can change, so exam preparation should follow the current ministry circular, timetable and paper instructions.
This difference matters for product design. A teacher should be able to choose Curriculum Mode for ordinary weekly teaching across all ten subjects, or Exam Revision Mode for Common Entrance and FSLC preparation. Exam mode can organise questions by the current paper structure without misleading users into thinking that unexamined or grouped subjects have disappeared from primary education.
Cameroon Teachers AI will use this two-layer structure. The first layer preserves the official carrier subject. The second layer exposes the component or strand teachers recognise: Health Education, Environmental Education, Technology and Engineering, History, Geography, Citizenship, Agro-pastoral Farming, Home Economics, Arts and Crafts, Music and Performing Arts, and Computational Thinking. The platform can then generate a lesson note labelled, for example, Science and Technology — Health Education, or Vocational Studies — Home Economics.
Schools may use timetable labels that differ slightly, and ministry assessment arrangements can be revised. Teachers should always compare generated material with the current scheme of work, official curriculum document and examination guidance. The purpose of the subject map is not to replace those documents. It is to make the official structure understandable and to ensure that every classroom component receives useful lesson notes, activities, assessments and samples.
